Latest Data
Crude Oil or Petroleum (from Latin petra – rock and Greek oleum – oil) is used mostly, by volume, for producing fuel oil and petrol (gasoline), both important "primary energy" sources.
84% of the hydrocarbons present in petroleum is converted into energy-rich fuels, including petrol, diesel, jet, heating, and other fuel oils, and liquefied petroleum gas.
Due to its incredible energy density and relative abundance, it has become the world's most important source of energy since the mid-1950s.

Petroleum is also the raw material for many chemical products, including solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics; the 16% not used for energy production is converted into these other materials.
Classifications:
The oil industry classifies CRUDE
? by its relative weight API gravity or viscosity
Light crude oil
contains a low content of wax; crudes with high viscosities (heavy crude oil) are more difficult to transport/pump
Heavy crude oil
is any type of crude oil which does not flow easily. It's a relative term, compared to light crude oil, but relates to specific technical issues of its own on pumping, transportation, and refining.
? by its sulfur content ...Refining Processes
sweet
contains relatively little sulfur
sour
contains substantial amounts of sulfur and requires more refining in order to meet current product specifications
? by the location of its origin: ...map
