Absolute Rate The fixed portion of an interest-rate swap, expressed as a percentage rather than as a premium or a discount to a reference rate. Absolute Advantage The ability of a country, individual, company, or region to produce a good or service at a lower cost per unit than the cost at which any other entity produces that good or service. Account 1. A statement of indebtedness for goods or services from one person to another. 2. An account maintained by a bank to preserve a depositor's money or securities. Active Investing An investment strategy involving ongoing buying and selling actions of the investor. Active investors will purchase investments and continuously monitor their activity in order to exploit profitable conditions. Actual Return The actual gain or loss of an investor. This can be expressed in the following formula: expected return (ex-ante) plus the effect of firm-specific and economy-wide news. Actuals 1. A term used to describe the underlying in future and forward contracts, dealing with commodities rather than financial instruments. 2. A term used to describe a securities historical volatitity.
